knowledge, to show gross pericardial calcification in the roentgenograms. Pericardial calcification is probably related to the duration of pericarditis,' and it is possible that, in our patient, the disease may have been undetected for some years. Microscopic calcification was previously noted in pericardial specimens obtained from a patient with "rheumatoid pericarditis."s The possibility of tuberculous or other infective etiology has been excluded in our patient; he had a negative PPD skin test, negative bacteriologic cultures of the resected pericardium, and the pathologic appearance of the areas of pericardium showing active cellular infiltration was consistent with rheumatoid pericarditi~.~ The rheumatoid etiology is further suggested by the immunofluorescent study of the resected pericardium; it. demonstrated complexes of IgM, IgC and Cs. Similar immunoglobulin complexes have been encountered in pleuropericardial lesion^^.^ and synoviums of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. By contrast, we have been unable to demonstrate immunoglobulin complexes in the fresh specimens of resected pericardiurn from two patients with "recurrent nonspecific pericarditis" or in autopsy specimens of patients with uremic pericarditis or those with apparently healthy pericardium.
